Here is Part 1 of a more detailed tutorial on the Van Morrison tune Moondance. I say ‘more detailed’ because I did a beginners/working version about 5 years ago that if you’ve subscribed to the How To Play Bass free monthly ezine has a complete version of as one of the bonus items you get for subscribing.
This will be a two parter to do it justice. In this part we’re going to cover the Intro, Verse 1, Bridge 1 and the Chorus. Each section has been rendered as a separate video so that you can work on the parts of teh song, one part at a time.
Each section of the song has been filmed with a soundalike backing track at performance tempo and then also with a ‘chordal metronome’ playing at 100 BPM (if I remember rightly). Plus the videos have been edited with ‘opicture in picture’ technology so you can see close ups of both the fretting and the picking hands.
Moondance was also the name of an album – it was Van Morrison’s third album and was released in February 1970. The song itself was not released as a single until 1977.
The bass player on the Moondance album – and on the original track – is John Klingberg.
The videos comprising Part 2 will be released shortly…the quickest way to find out is to subscribe to my free how to play bass monthly ezine – then you’ll get an email notifying you as soon as Part 2 is live.
