Isolated Bass – Got To Be There – Michael Jackson – Welton Felder

Here’s a video clip of the track Got To Be There taken from the ‘Stripped Mixes’ album by Michael Jackson.? I think the bass player on this is Welton Felder…but there are echoes of James Jamerson all over the track.? (In fact one day I’d like to add a bonus lesson to Cracking The Detroit Code that examines how Welton channelled Jamerson…that would be cool).

Here’s the video, where you can listen to the track without any drums and most of the other instruments – what’s very instructional is how much the song can lean on the bass line:
