McCartney Style Sight Reading Etude 9 – Uptempo Walking Pop

March 28, 2023 by Paul Wolfe

On this page is the video, pdf and practice tracks for the Paul McCartney Style Sight Reading Etude 9.

This etude is a 150 BPM uptempo bouncy Beatles-esque ‘version’ of a Motown style chord progression that I’m sure you’ll recognize.

To generate the bass line I used a slightly more advanced featrure of Band in A Box and used TWO different styles. So the format of the song is:

  • Intro
  • Verse 1
  • Bridge
  • Chorus
  • Verse 2
  • Bridge 2
  • Chorus 2

For the Intros and choruses I used the dynamic McCartney walking style (style is ‘MACCA3’ in the Band In A BOx style pack.)

For the rest I used the ‘MACCA1’ pop style from the BIAB Style Pack. But I used the A style – which is mostly roots and 5ths in a two beat style rhythm – for the verses and the B style to give a simpler walking pop style for the first 4 bars of the bridge and back to the A style for the 4 bars that incorporate the hits. That gives a nice variation to the Etude!

Here’s the video of the etude:
