Here’s a video showing how to play bass to Break On Through To The Other Side by The Doors.
The original bass part was credited to Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek as keyboard bass. And Ray Manzarek’s ‘keyboard bass’ approach is very simple. That makes this a perfect song for beginners to get their fingers around as it’s straightforward.
The song format is:
Intro – 8 bars (2 bars of drums + 6 bars of bass)
Verse 1- 6 bar pattern
Chorus 1 – 6 bar chorus + 4 bar repeat of intro pattern
Verse 2 – 6 bar pattern
Chorus 2 – 6 bar pattern + 4 bar tag (shown in video)
Keyboard solo – 1 bar pattern shown in Chorus 2 tag over and over…
Morrison sings ‘Everybody’ – either 1 bar pattern above – or 2 bar intro pattern
Verse 3 – 6 bar verse pattern (with 4 bars prior to verse that repeats intro pattern)
Chorus 3 – chorus pattern repeated to end (apart from the ‘D’ stabs as the last two bars of the verse) – finish on a stab of ‘E’
